Secondary metabolites in contrast to primary are dispensable and not essential for survival, but nevertheless provide organisms that produce them an evolutionary advantage.
Due to their abundance in fruits, vegetables, beverages and other foods they have a strong impact on animal and human health. General classes include phenylpropanoids (e.g. flavonoids, coumarins, stilbenoids), polyketides, alkaloids and terpenoids.
